Optimizing your optimism

Where do we go now?

It’s so hard to be optimistic these days, especially for us artsy types. We all have good days and bad days, but the most important thing you can do is capitalize on those good moments. You treasure that moment, and you fight for it.

Some days it doesn’t work, and that’s going to happen. Still, on the days you wake up feeling great, grab on with both hands. Here’s a short list of my dos and don’ts when it comes to holding onto my optimism.

Do:

  • Take your time. Let yourself enjoy the day.
  • Allow yourself a reward for anything you manage to accomplish.
  • Pace yourself. Don’t burn through all that excess energy too quickly.

Don’t:

  • Run straight to the nearest 24 hour news outlet. Honestly, the news will be there tomorrow. Just leave it.
  • Talk yourself straight out of your good mood. Most of us do this. Don’t let your inner voice tell you can’t do well today.
  • Mess it up by trying to do all the things. Do some of the things well. The rest will come.
  • Forget why you’re doing what you’re trying to do. Whatever it is. Hold on to that purpose.

I am what I like to call a realistic optimist. There are moments when I am just convinced all’s right with the world despite the evidence to the contrary, but I temper those thoughts with realism. That’s for my sanity.

Here’s the thing, true optimism isn’t false positivity. It’s understanding our circumstances in their best light, and, yeah, sometimes it’s expecting that those choices you are making are just the best of bad choices some days. That’s the way of things.

It’s how we deal with the struggle that defines who we are. The struggle should never be allowed to define us. So, if you’re feeling happy, let yourself enjoy it for a change. There’s nothing to feel guilty for at all.
